Vehicle access to timberland is essential for forest management, resource protection, harvesting operations, and other uses. Forest roads must be properly located and constructed to provide adequate access, minimize costs and maintenance, and to guard against non-point sources of pollution and satisfy the sustainable forestry initiative.

Purpose

This course will teach you how to plan, design, locate, construct, stabilize, use, maintain and close forest roads.  Consideration will be given to permanent and temporary roads, skid trails and landings.  The important role played by water quality and Best Management Practices (BMPs) will be explained. By using straightforward classroom and field techniques, you will gain a better understanding of environmentally sound road construction principles and will have acquired hands-on experience in designing and laying out roads, skid trails and landings that includes drainage and stabilization systems.

This course will benefit any natural resource professional and others who use or are responsible for forest roads and their related access network.
